Rafal Milach - Interview with photographer
Geographically speaking the journey started from Crimea. The thing that visually struck me there was the contrast between the beautiful scenery, especially on the southern coast of Crimea, and what has been done to it for decades of the Soviet Union. I got struck by the omnipresence of concrete. Wherever I went, wherever I stopped I would always come across a concrete beach, blocks of flats made of concrete, concrete frameworks of unfinished hotels, concrete mazes. Everything made of concrete.
Industrial zones and the iron waste by the sea don’t remind harmonic idyll between nature and man. People have changed the landscape in a very brutal way here. But the sea fights back for its natural shape and territory. Local people seem to respect the power of the sea. Nevertheless at he same time they thoughtlessly devastate it.
Media patronage over exhibition / Adam Panczuk
„Karczeb” denotes a tree trunk with roots still in the ground that is very hard to remove. It is also a local name for a group of people inhabiting the Podlasie region of Poland who live according to the rhythm of nature and in close relationship with the land. Adam Panczuk watched and documented this unique bond and approach to life over the years and succeeded in creating a series of strong perplexing portraits. There is a story that goes far beyond the frame of every picture.
The work has the air of magic realism which allows for a broad reception and endless interpretation and it offers an alternative to the stereotypical view of the Polish countryside. The project received honourable mention at the Magnum Expression Award 2009 and Sony World Photography Award 2009 contests.
